News - Organic FAQ | Q&A

Organic FoodOrganic can best be defined as all natural. In other words, stay away from corporations and Walmart. To a lot of people, it is a strange concept to grasp that products can be free from chemicals and words you cannot say. By definition, organic is a product that is derived from a living organism. Organic products are not only healthy for you but they are also good for the environment. The simplicity of these natural products cut back on excess usage of resources and bi-products. Ultimately, it does not require as much energy to move the product to the consumers.

Many people are familiar with organic foods. They are one of many products that can be organic. Organic food is especially great for the environment and the community. Most people have heard of a farmer’s market. This was popular until our agriculture became an industry in which food was mass produced using chemicals and pesticides. The farmers market is where people could convene and buy products from neighbors. People would bring corn, beans and squash among many other things. The farmers market instilled a sense of community and sustainability. Now food is merely a quick drive away.

Another type of product would be organic medicine. I am not referring to elixirs or random spices but rather grandma’s tea. Organic pharmaceuticals are vitamin rich and healthy. One of the best products for skin care after a burn is not Neosporin but rather vitamin E. If applied to a scar early enough, it can reduce the marks greatly. It also helps with cardiovascular health if taken daily. Of course, there are herb remedies that are all organic. One of the most famous would be green tea and honey. Remedies and medicine help in couple practical ways. First, it cuts back on testing of chemicals and it is cheaper to buy these products than it is to buy antibiotics or prescription drugs.

One weird organic product to think about is clothing. Organic clothing would be 100 percent cotton or hemp. Eco-friendly clothing is great because it cuts back on the usage or legal pesticides. With food products, pesticides are strict and highly regulated. With clothing, pesticides can be used freely because the plant product is not being used for consumption but rather it is being used as a source of fabric.

Cars can even be organic. With fossil fuels, there is an entire process in turning oil into gas. If you were to own a biodiesel car then you could fuel your driving with organic vegetable oil. A lot of restaurants use peanut oil because it is cheap. Some brands are not organic but there are a lot that are. If you were to convert your car or furnace to biodiesel, you would have an organic source of energy. It is obviously better for the environment but it is also more fuel efficient.

There are many products that are organic and that you can take advantage of. It is a safe feeling knowing that you are reducing your carbon footprint while avoiding dangerous chemicals and pesticides.
