Recycling

Recycling is one of the easiest ways that you can take steps to do your part in the battle against global warming.  With so much information and so many ideas for making eco-friendly changes in your life, it might be confusing about where you can start and how much change you can make.  Recycling should be your first step toward living an eco-friendly life.

You should know that you can recycle nearly everything and in most cases, you can put it all into one bin, or garbage can.  Most companies who handle recycling now have facilities where they sort your recyclables.  To make it even easier, most of the things that you’re not sure whether or not you can recycle are labeled to help you know where to put your garbage.  If you’re still not sure, though, here are a few easy rules.

  • Cardboard packaging, except for those that are coated with wax, recycles.  This is almost everything, from pasta boxes to pop boxes.  The packaging from your face lotion recycles, too.  Make sure to break it all down, so it fits more easily into your recycle bin, but so it’s easier for your recycling company to sort.
  • Glass.  Not eye glasses or drinking glasses, but beer bottles, hot sauce bottles and makeup bottles.  That glass recycles.  Make sure to rinse them out before you add them to your recycle bin and go ahead and plop them in.  Just don’t break it, as it could cause someone to get injured.
  • Plastic.  Most plastic is recyclable and most recycling companies will tell you what number plastics they take.  Make sure to check the number on your plastic before you toss it in, though, because recycling companies will just toss it into the garbage if it’s not the right number.
  • Newspapers and junk mail recycles.  These are some of the biggest fillers of landfills, so make sure to always dump your papers in your recycle bin.  You can even put magazines in the recycle bin now, as most magazines are taking steps to make their publications more eco-friendly.
  • Aluminum cans.  Maybe you hear about the people who save cans for months to recycle.  This is because they get paid for the cans they can recycle.  While it’s only pennies a pound, this can really add up if you’re diligent with it.

So, now that you have a better idea of what recycles, you can go ahead and start recycling.  Some people have different systems in place for recycling, but many just have one extra garbage can in their kitchens for recycling.  This helps to make everything easy to take to the recycle bin.  If you don’t have the extra room for another garbage can, consider putting your recycle bin in another room or your garage if that’s easy access for you.
