Definition of Environmental Technology

The field of Environmental Technology is taking off like crazy.  Everywhere you look, colleges are offering more an more options in Environmental Technology courses.  Many universities are even offering an Environmental Technology degree.  You’ll probably be hearing more about it in the future, too.  Environmental Technology degrees are gaining in popularity and the number of jobs that require an Environmental Technology degree are literally popping up all over the place.  Not only will you find jobs relating to Environmental Technology in the government environmental agencies, but you’ll find that in the not-so-distant future, most companies will offer environmental technology positions.  So that leaves many people wondering what, exactly is the definition of Environmental Technology and how does it apply to every day life?

The definition of Environmental Technology is materials and techniques used in the prevention, containment and reduction of pollution.  This, however, seems to be a narrow definition if you look at all the jobs who use an environmental technology degree.  While it would be obvious that many of these positions would be in agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the US Fish and Wildlife Agency, it might not be so obvious that many major corporations are now hiring individuals with an Environmental Technology degree for positions in their companies.

Major corporations are jumping on the environmental bandwagon these days and trying to clean up everything from the way they produce their goods to how they ship their products.  Many companies are even looking for ways to use more sustainable practices and eco-friendly energy to fuel their offices.  This requires teams of people who know what ways companies can reduce their energy consumption while maintaining their business standards.

This is where the environmental technology degree comes in.  While the definition of environmental technology may not exactly cover teaching major corporations to use less energy, a looser use of the definition definitely covers this.

The ways companies name these positions are going to vary widely, but it’s a trend that cannot be ignored.  Companies are finding that investors like the idea of investing in a corporation who uses more “green” practices.  Plus with the stock market being so volatile right now, many major corporations are looking for ways to boost their stock prices and make their companies more valuable.  The idea is that a company adopts more “green” practices, it will be seen as more valuable to consumers and therefore, business will improve.

It will be the job of people with Environmental Technology knowledge to help these companies develop strategies to become more environmentally friendly.  These positions will include everything from ideas to improve companies’ energy efficiency and help to save money on energy costs, to helping corporations find grants and tax cuts for improving their ecological efforts.  Environmental Technology, whether strictly by definition or working loosely within the boundaries of the meaning, is a very exciting field and one that will continue to grow over time.  If you are in a situation where you’re looking at your current career choices, consider going into Environmental Technology.
